Stereotactic surgery is not indicated for spasticity, although other functional neurosurgical procedures may help in many cases (Fig. 431-2). Spinal cord stimulation may lessen spasticity in multiple sclerosis or incomplete spinal cord injury.70 may improve a spastic bladder in those conditions,37 and also has been used for the spasticity that accompanies hemiplegia after a cerebrallesion.8.9 Spasticity of the lower extremities in cerebral palsy may lend itself to selective rhizotomy, but patient selection must be done with care; many affected children depend on spasticity for weight-bearing.
